MEDIUM: –

The physical medium or communication channel which is use for information transfer among computers. Example twisted pair, co-axial cable, optical fibre cables, microwave and satellite communication.

SERVER: – A server is powerful computer which has fast processor, large memory storage and special sever software, etc. it provides some services or resources to other computer known as client.

CLIENT: – A client is a computer that accesses the services or share resources on a network provide by the server.

HUB: – A hub is a central hardware device in a network that manages traffic across the network. It divides the bandwidth or communication speed equally among the computers connected to it.

SWITCH: –

A switch is a central hardware device that manages the flow of information among the pc and device which connect to it. The rate of flow of information is link to the speed backed up by the switch and the devices.

NIC: – More commonly referred to as LAN card, the NETWORK INTERFACE CARD is a hardware device that enables a computer to connect to a network and send receive data.

NETWORK PERIPHRAL: –

Network peripherals are computer peripherals that are either connect to the network indirectly or through a network PC or directly to the network’s Hub or switch by a suitable connector and cable. Example are plotter, scanner ad printer.

Network Operating System: It is an operating system required by all the computers on network, the NOS makes the network work by coordinating, enabling services and sharing of resources among the networked computers.

Example Microsoft windows NT, Windows98, windows2000, windows XP, Unix and novel NetWare.

Router: – It is a network hardware device which is used in WAN (Wide Area Network) for routing at a across the different parts of a network.

Protocol: – It is a set of rule that govern how data is transfer among computers on a network example- TCP/IP (Transmission control protocol/Internet Protocol).
